Open any UI/UX portfolio and check the status bar.

It’s almost always 9:41. Designers use it because Apple made it the standard. Apple has used 9:41 in its product marketing for years, and most mockups, UI kits, and status bar assets copy that look. It became the industry default.

So where did it come from?

1. The keynote reveal

When Steve Jobs launched the first iPhone at Macworld on January 9, 2007, the whole presentation was scripted. Apple wanted the iPhone to appear on the giant screen at the same moment the time on the audience’s watches matched it.

They estimated the intro would run about 40 minutes, then added a minute or two of padding in case the talk ran long. Early product shots actually showed 9:42. By the time the iPad launched in 2010, Apple had settled on 9:41 to match how the stage delivery really played out.

2. Design tools made it a standard

Apple put 9:41 on every commercial, billboard, and product photo, so it started to signal polished, launch-ready design. When Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD took off, the people making UI kits and device mockups built 9:41 into their status bars so their work would look official. Everyone downloaded those kits, and the habit spread.

3. It looks good

The time also works visually. The digits balance well and don’t compete with the Wi-Fi, signal, and battery icons next to them.

One exception: the Apple Watch uses 10:09. That’s a nod to the 10:10 “smile” layout watchmakers have used for decades, and it keeps the hands from covering the complications.

So is 9:41 actually cooked?

Not really. It’s a good detail with a real story behind it. But if every screen in your portfolio shows 9:41 and nothing else sets your work apart, you look like everyone else using the same kit.

Use the time if you like it, but make your case studies, your process, and the business results behind your designs the thing people remember. That’s what gets you hired, not a perfect status bar.
